Bunker Hill Covered Bridge Is Last of Its Kind
Published Jul 03, 2008

You can’t drive on it anymore, but you can walk on it.

The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge was built in 1895 and is one of only two original remaining covered bridges in North Carolina. The bridge spans Lyle Creek and is located near Claremont, about halfway between Statesville and Hickory.

The 85-foot-long bridge was covered in 1900 with a 91-foot roof made of wooden shingles, and the shingles were replaced with a tin roof in 1921. The bridge was designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark in 2001.

The Lyle Creek structure is closed in January and February, but open to pedestrians all other months.
